All that glitters is not gold

A few years back. I am working in this hospital. I used to get night duties once or twice a week. Two senior consultants were alternating their duties in intensive care. On all his night duties, one of them treated everyone on duty with dinner. He made everyone comfortable. The other was not very approachable. He used to find faults with duty doctors and keep correcting them constantly. He was quite annoying. We used to look forward to having our duty with the first consultant. He was our favourite.

One day, I happened to listen to the conversation of consultants in their cabin. Our favourite consultant was mocking all the junior doctors and complaining about their work. The annoying doctor was supporting us all the way through. It was a shocking reality that I got to experience in my life for the first time.

It was just the beginning. After that incident, I have seen so many people in my life, with two sides. I have seen people who are very pleasing, fun to be with, very generous and loving in front of others,  digging graves behind their backs, talking ill about them, cursing them, and wishing for their downfall. I have also seen people who are genuinely interested in others but they put on a rough face.

With all these experiences, I learned not to get carried away by how people behave in front of us and instead, I started to reserve my impulsive opinions. I stopped judging people by the way they project themselves. Many times those labelled as rough, tough nut to crack, short tempered are actually like jackfruit. The closer I went to them, I got to know how sweet their inside was.

The biggest lesson I learned is that all that glitters is not gold.
